New to Grumbles House’s inventory of interesting merchandise late last year, we added House on the Hill cookie molds.  I met Carol, an interesting professional baker and food writer, at Music in the Garden, whose friend recently bought the company.  I was struck by the beauty the molds allow one to create via cookies, small cakes, ornaments or sandwiches. The variety of molds available include seasonal, historic and just plain pretty.  The new owner is adding new designs to the collection.  Carol agreed to do a demonstration and a class and I was sold

The history of molded cookies such as gingerbread predates the Roman Empire and is fraught with intrigue, romance, and even sex. Supposedly the right cookie could make your children smarter or lure you a husband.

To the class, Carol brought 4 or more types of dough for participants to work with.  If you aren’t big on baking, the molds can be used for paper crafting, making ornaments, unique wall art or tea sandwiches too beautiful to eat.  There was a bit of a history lesson, hands on fun and lots of tasting during the class. Shortbread, gingerbread,  speculaa, marzipan and springerle are the types of cookies most often used with these molds. Besides molding, the students also painted a cookie and took several home to bake.

If you would be interested in taking a class, call the boutique and leave your contact info and which day of the week works best for you.  We will schedule more classes as interest dictates.   (352) 322-3968.  We have quite a few molds in stock and are happy to order what we don’t have, that you would like, with a 50% deposit.

It’s a slow-growing evergreen bush, great for a shrub or it can be grown into a tree that can grow almost 20 ‘ tall. It produces edible fruit in 3 colors. I hear the blue is best. It flowers Jan. to spring and produces fruit from late spring through summer. We have 5 gal. bushes for $29.

One of the many unique lines folks seems to love at Grumbles House is our selection of Quilling Cards.  The intriguing paper filigree art form involves the use of thin strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and the coil-shaped, these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.

These cards and pictures are designed using high quality paper products, cut into 1/16 inch thin slices. The paper is then rolled, or shaped into different designs by skilled hands. These smaller designs are then assembled together to create a new larger figure, design, item, or shape. What is unique to the process is that the paper is not laid flat but is professionally glued and placed on its end. This allows the design to obtain a three-dimensional look.

Just recently we’ve gotten in simple frames in 3 colors to better preserve and show off this art for years to come.  When you want a special card, consider a quilling card, $8.99, at Grumbles House

Here are just a few of the designs you can find at our store.

Last week I found 7 vintage wood folding chairs that I think are pretty cool!  The family I bought them from got them from their church (Dunnellon Presbyterian) years ago when the church updated chairs for their fellowship hall.   I’m HAPPY with the result of Howard’s Restore-A-Finish product in cleaning them up.

One of them is stamped with US American Seating Company so I had fun researching their history.

Below, brass & leather handbells – 4 cases of them in different sizes and tones, come in heavy steel cases. Also a handsewn quilt, cool lamps, pretty old glassware, and other goodies that need a new home.

I’ve already placed our Poinsettia order to arrive the week of Nov.22-24. IF you want to make sure to get a certain color or size, we are taking orders.
